the begging bowl remains empty
although it has been constantly filled

don’t you know
desire makes beggars of us all
put down the yearning you carry
and go in pursuit of joy

I have been reading a lot of old zen stories lately and one that stuck in my mind was of the beggar (a reincarnated master), whose bowl was filled with coins by the king (his previous student). He was trying to teach the king an important lesson in this life: No matter how many coins went into the bowl, it remained empty.

That is what human desire is like.
It is our nature to never feel satisfied or that what we have is enough. Once we attain the house, job, relationship, wealth etc the excitement goes and once again we are left wanting. We still desire more.

So I am learning to trust more and know my bowl is already full - I lack nothing.
