‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.’ Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
I have downloaded the daily prayer schedule for Holy Week from the Anglican Church site and this morning I read this verse and it really spoke to me and comforted me. The world is a mess right now. People are dying and we are trying to protect ourselves and our families each day from an invisible enemy. There is stress, isolation, loneliness, boredom, frustration and fear. Sometimes there is anger too. But it won’t last. This too shall change. The only thing in life we can be sure of, is that life itself is not static and in time all things alter. We have to believe that when it does, the world may in fact be a better place. Perhaps we will have learnt from this time of isolation, that we do in fact need each other. Perhaps we will have learnt how important it is to take care of our planet. I pray we will learn to live in a way that is more conscious and compassionate, healthier and happier. This is an opportunity to become better people.
Another thought I had this morning was that this world is just one reality - the physical one. Equally important is our spiritual home and using this opportunity to quiet oneself, turn within and trust in God, is imperative. This opportunity of social isolation, of more time to be quiet, is an opportunity to develop our spiritual selves. Instead of worrying about the future or trying to control what we don’t have control over, we can focus on our spirituality, strengthen our faith and trust things will unfold in time.
So, do not let your hearts be troubled. In time, things will change. If you don’t know the way forward, that is ok. Maybe you are not meant to right now. I believe if we develop our inner world and trust in this process, God will take our hands and show us that amidst all this chaos, there is a way and it through him.
