It helps to find beauty somewhere

It helps to find beauty somewhere

I abandoned a book today,
one I should have known
I did not have enough time to finish.
Instead I’m thinking about all the people
around the world right now, that feel alone.

The world is a mess
We have succumbed to a virus
not meteors or robots
or nuclear bombs,
just a little mutating cell
that has made us all afraid to breathe

and touch one another
It has brought shame and fear into our lives
like a new religion

I spoke to an elderly lady yesterday
who told me about her life,
her father’s quirky personality
she spoke with a smile as she remembered.
She just wanted to talk for a while
to connect
She took off her mask as she spoke to me
she seemed to understand loneliness can kill,
just as much as a virus

It is just a slower death
one you don’t notice until the end
like frogs boiling in a pot

We are all so lonely right now
boiling away
So I stare at your picture of the stars and Northern Lights
and I am not sure why
but I find it strangely comforting
We are all going to die at some point
If COVID doesn’t kill us, something else will
but the stars
the beautiful stars,
they will live on
