Go deeper into the stillness of your being....it is there that you will find peace.

Many eastern gurus and spiritual teachers, such as Deepak Chopra consider Meditation to be the most important spiritual practice one can implement into his or her life. Meditation is the art of entering your unconscious mind, enabling you to access this place of amazing stillness, peace, creativity and truth. It allows you to connect with your higher self and gain tremendous insight about yourself and your life, so that in time you will realise that learning to meditate was the most important move you ever made.

Not many people really understand what meditation actually is. There is a mistaken belief that it involves emptying your mind, however this is impossible! Meditation is about quieting your mind, learning to control the endless flow of thoughts (planning, analysing, worrying, day-dreaming etc) in order to bring about a state of peace and calm. This is not an easy task though, and as such meditation is a discipline that requires regular practice.

A DEFINITION OF MEDITATION: It is the directed and conscious focus of attention that results in the quietening and stilling of the mind, so that one is free from distracting thoughts and emotions, and the anxiety they cause.

Meditation is anything that brings one's awareness into the present moment, an increase in awareness and mindfulness. The essence of meditation is just witnessing. It means consciousness is aware of the content of the mind, and ultimately of itself, with equanimity. Meditation can be about observing the silence / stillness. As mentioned above, meditation involves quietening the mind NOT empty- ing the mind (which is impossible). As the mind becomes tranquil, many things about ourselves and the world around us, become clear. We gain clarity on decisions and access the truth of how we feel. We gain insight into ourselves and the meaning of our existence. The way to wisdom and intelligence is to understand our- selves as human beings. Not through a theory, not through a concept, but through direct experience and this is what meditation gives us.

Through meditation, we are training ourselves to become present in the moment, which is known as mindfulness. Mindfulness is essential to spiritual practice, for no matter what spiritual tradition we follow, we must have a mind that is able to stay in the present moment if our understanding and experience is to deepen. The practice of mindfulness is essential in order to train the mind and forms the basis of learning to meditation. Each meditation session is a journey of discovery to understand the basic truth of who we are.

Meditation techniques aren't new. They've been around for thousands of years. Originally the goal of meditation was to help people deepen their understanding and awareness of the sacred and mystical forces of life, but you don't have to be religious to benefit from meditation. Anyone can meditate, regardless of religious or cultural background. These days, due to the scientific evidence of the medical and psychological benefits of meditation, meditation techniques are being introduced into corporate companies and mainstream life.
